Do you like to work with your hands and build the things that you need rather than purchase a finishes product or pay for someone to build it for you? If all of these questions describe you, then here is an idea you might consider, build a chicken coop for your chickens yourself. Building the coop gives shelter and protection to your birds, and a sense of accomplishment to you.

Now that you have decided to build a chicken coop there is another very important question that you have to answer and that is exactly what kind and size of chicken coop do you need to house your chickens.

There are different types and sizes of chicken coops and the one you build is going to have to be big enough to house all of your chickens. Once you figure out how big your chicken coop needs to be, then you can decide what kind of chicken coop is the right one for you. If you only a between 3 and 5 chickens a chicken tractor might work for you, for larger numbers you may want to have a stationary coop.

The basic tools that you will need to build a chicken coop re a hammer, a Phillips or flathead screwdriver, and a saw, but for a more complex design, a drill gun may be necessary too. The building materials that you will need to build a chicken coop are fairly basic as well. Plywood, chicken wire, and boards is all you really need to build a chicken coop.  However, you can substitute other building materials for building your chicken coop. For example PVC pipe can be used for the frame instead of boards, and they are more resistant to weather, and canvas can be used for a roof rather than plywood too.
